I have to admit, science isn’t really my thing. I like reading about the fruits of other people’s scientific endeavors in layman’s terms. I’ve never had much affinity for actually DOING science myself.
But, alas, I am a homeschool mom. Therefore, I must not only DO science, but I also must muster some enthusiasm for it so as not to transfer my disdain for it onto my unsuspecting children. (Thankfully, Havarti is a Science Guy, so I figure any damage I do ought to be counteracted by his love of this stuff. He’s the base to my acid, if you will.)
See, I can make science metaphors. That’s why I was an English major.
Anyhow, today we did some kitchen chemistry to find out what household chemicals are acids and bases. And we did so by making our very own, handy-dandy pH indicator with red cabbage.
Isn’t it such a pretty purple color?
Then I set up the chemicals we were going to test.
The Muse got ready to write down our results.
And then we tested.
Acids turn pink, bases turn blue, neutrals stay purple.
I have to admit, doing science today was pretty fun. I also have to admit, however, that I mostly just enjoyed making all the pretty colors. And I’m fairly certain that my artsy-fartsy eldest child, like me, spent more mental energy imagining the colors in a painting than on processing the scientific information.
Perhaps she’ll marry her own neutralizer someday. 🙂
